In Gesticulations, Roberto Ekholm explores movements and time with the limitation of the medium. Gesticulations are an ongoing series of movement sketches using iPhone live photos on a timer or video.
The live photo captures about 3 sec of movements. 1.5 sec before capture and 1.5 sec after. Converting the live photos to videos they are either in a bounce or loop setting.
Each shot is an improvised movement pushing the body and shapes to be captured as a sequence within the 3 sec photo. The iPhone is placed in a similar position for all shots taken at the time. The location is an integral part of the live photos allowing Ekholm to both respond to both space and time. They are staged, improvised and cinematic.
Ekholm is exploring his own body’s limitations and possibilities. He is acknowledging the shifts in his body as he ages. These gesticulations/movement sketches are becoming archived gestures documenting his body changing. These vicissitudes might be experienced only by him but as the series continues throughout his life, they will capture time as he grows older and his body is affected by health and ageing.
